spaces for different thinking

Joe is an accomplished sound installation artist, building interactive ambient sound spaces that enhance existing places and create virtual ones in the headspace of manipulated noise and generative music.

Joe’s first large-scale installation was at the American Visionary Art Museum, in Baltimore, Maryland. As a part of the museum’s 1999 exhibition, We Are Not Alone: Angels and Other Aliens, he wired the entrance ramp of the museum for the show, creating a transitional space between the real world and the surreal world of the exhibition.

In 2002, Joe began what was to be a long and fruitful collaboration with the elusive Mars Tokyo, a surreal minimalist working in the medium of tiny theaters, strange scenery, and interior landscapes, building the first of a line of highly-specialized display systems. Sharing the artist’s interest in the processes of observation, he took her rough ideas for how to display her art and turned them into real environments, complete with interactive soundtracks, subtle lighting, and mechanical trickery. The largest of these installations was built for the Theaters of the 13th Dimension exhibition (and later was shown at the School 33 gallery and the historic Senator Theater).
